The Advertising Future for African-Americans Today a proliferation of American faces may be seen in commercial and print ads. But what are the images that are being portrayed? Is African-American culture a montage of Hip Hop music, athletic prowess "a la Michael Jordan," Kente cloth-wearing African families, sarcastic, jaded children or singing and dancing youth? While African Americans are seen in one-shot takes, few outstanding multi-dimensional portrayals of African Americans are seen in the movies or on television. As our country grows more diverse, more groups will lobby and vie for valuable advertising dollars. Those interested in change will have to take aggressive action. There is room for everyone to be represented, but the jury is still out on who will create the image.
